Prosumer is an interesting word. I'm not sure when the first instance of its use happened, but it is well crafted from a
PR standpoint, imho. In the professional audio world that I live in and make my real living, there are three tiers, Professional, Semi-pro, and consumer. The semi-pro word is more condescending as "semi" means "less" giving a feeling of "less professional". Compare that to prosumer where the "pro" makes the word "more". It gives the newby buyer the feeling he's moving UP rather than down. Love it or hate it, that term will stick.
